PORTISHEAD RADIO GKA

A website celebrating the history of Portishead Radio/GKA - the UK's long-range maritime communications centre.

GB100GKU

OFCOM have kindly issued callsign GB100GKU to operate on the amateur radio bands to commemorate 100 years of the long-range  maritime radio service in the UK. The station will operate between 1st-28th July from Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset, not far from the Highbridge receiving site which closed in 2000.


A special QSL card will be issued on request.


100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE LONG-RANGE MARITIME RADIO SERVICE

COMMEMORATING 100 YEARS: 1920 - 2020

2020 sees 100 years since the long-range maritime radio service commenced in the UK from Devizes Radio, which opened in 1920.


Many events are planned including:


  • Book about the history of the service - due for publication July 2020
  • Staff reunion (now postponed until 2021)
  • Illustrated talks to amateur radio clubs and local history groups*
  • Exhibition and booksigning in Burnham-on-Sea (postponed)
  • Special amateur radio callsign (GB100GKU) for July
  • Magazine and press articles
  • Lecture at the 2020 RSGB National Convention*
  • Other events to be confirmed


* Subject to lifting of Government restrictions.

NEW BOOK ABOUT PORTISHEAD RADIO

The book will be published towards the end of June 2020. Running to over 320 pages, it is full of historical information and supplemented with many photographs. There is also a chapter recalling many humourous stories about the station, and some of the characters who worked there are fondly remembered.


It will be available through Amazon and other online retailers, but signed and dedicated copies will be available through this website. A dedicated ordering page will be set up as soon as the book is available.
